04 Jan 5 Causes for Hair Loss that may surprise you!
Overview
We normally shed hair with certain amounts during our lifetime, a normal person can lose from 50-100 hairs on daily basis, so finding hair in your brush is totally normal, and new hairs will grow back with time, but the rate of hair growth decreases as we age.
The only concern that you should pay attention to is when your hair suddenly losses bigger amounts than it usually does, that is when you have to search from the origin of this sudden change to be able to save your hair before it’s too late.
Now, we shall go through some of the reasons for hair loss that you may not know before:
Causes:
- Hair styles that pull on the hair:
Hairstyles is what is all hair is about, some all love to change our hairstyles every once and a while, or some even keep the same hairstyle for ages, yet at the end a hair style is part of how we are.
But what if the hairstyle is not the right one for you? if you keep on styling your hair as a hair bun, or a pony tail, and keep your hair stretched all day long, sometimes even when you are asleep, that can pull your hair from the roots, and cause an excessive hair shedding.
So, try to find the right hair style that can keep your hair a bit loose, and try to keep your hair free and well-aerated while you are asleep.
- Problems with the immune system:
One of the unexpected hair loss causes is the immune system. Your immune system is responsible for taking defensive actions against foreign bodies or allergens that enter your body, but sometimes the immune system can overreact and actually attack your hair follicles, leading to more shedding than usual. if you lose hair on your scalp, face, or other parts of your body, you could have a condition called alopecia areata. Strands or clumps of hair coming out can also be a symptom of lupus. So, in case you doubt having any underlying problem, try to discuss it with your physician.
- Harsh Hair care products:
Many of us have a hair routine full of group of hair products that we keep using for a long time, and we can change the products every once and a while in case the old ones are not giving the same effect anymore.
What you should pay attention to is that most hair products are full of harsh chemicals, ex. Sulfates, parabens, which might not be suitable for your hair type, and which can have negative effect leading to hair loss overtime. So, try to find the right hair products that match your hair type, and not affect your hair health on the long run.
- Drugs and Medication:
There are many drugs that are believed to aid in hair loss, and we could be using on daily basis.
Many different types of drugs are thought to cause hair loss, including:
- Antibiotics and antifungal drugs
- Acne medications containing vitamin A (retinoids)
- Cholesterol-lowering drugs
- High blood pressure medications (anti-hypertensives), such as beta-blockers.
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Steroids
- Thyroid medications
- Weight loss drugs
It’s important to review any medications you take, and discuss their potential side effects with your doctor and pharmacist. If hair loss occurs from a drug you’re taking, there is a good chance that the hair will grow back after you stop taking the medication.
- Hereditary Hair Loss:
Yes, it could be your genes. There is perception that only males inherit the hair loss trait, together with their baldness pattern, but this is not all true, females can still inherit hair loss genes, but not with the same baldness pattern of men, of course. Yet, you don’t have to feel disappointed, there are many medications available that can help you slow the hair loss rate that you can combine in your daily hair routine. Consult your doctor for the best option available for you out there.
Hair loss causes are more than the ones we have discussed in here, but we tried to highlight some causes that might be aware of. Anyway, keep track of your hair health, follow a good hair routine, and please don’t panic if you just see a hair or two in your brush.
